Information
on The Runaways
Nico Minoru (Sister Grimm)
Current leader of the group.
Age 16
Powers: The Staff of One resides inside her body (her mom's
until her mom stabbed her with the staff and Nico's body absorbed
it). When she bleeds, the staff emerges and she can cast magic
and spells. After a few uses, the staff automatically goes back
into her body. She cannot cast the smae spell twice
Love Life: Dated Alex Wilder until he revealed himself to be
the mole inside the Runaways. Nico dumped him. Currently single
Character History:
Nico Minoru is a somewhat rebellious goth teenager whose parents, Robert and Tina Minoru, appeared to be an average American, church-going, middle-class couple. In reality, they were dark wizards who were members of a secret society known as The Pride.
When Nico and the other children of The Pride discovered the truth about their parents, they ran away from home and were determined to defy their evil legacy. Nico briefly took the codename "Sister Grimm," which was her AIM screenname.
During a battle with The Pride, Nico discovered she had inherited her parents' abilities to manipulate magical energies. She came into possession of the mystical Staff of One when her mother attempted to stab her with the staff and instead Nico's body absorbed it.
Nico's blood must be shed before the staff will emerge for her to wield, a requirement she generally achieves by using a pocket knife given to her by fellow Runaways member Chase Stein. This allows for an interesting parallel to goth culture, seeing as how stereotypical goth kids are often involved in self-mutilation. The exact extent of the staff's abilities are not known, but speculation is that it can generate a large variety of magical effects activated by Nico's simple voice commands. Nico has recently expounded on the Staff's abilities; before conjuring a spell, she must concentrate on painful memories, or memories that leave her with feelings of guilt. The only limitation to its abilities is that Nico has been unable to cast any one particular spell more than once.
Nico was involved with fellow Runaway Alex Wilder until he revealed himself to be the mole inside the Runaways who kept their parents informed of what the group was up to and where they were situated at any particular time. She was briefly attracted to a boy the Runaways encountered named Topher but later discovered he was a vampire.
When the Runaways finally confronted their parents and their powerful, extra-dimensional allies, the Gibborim, Alex revealed his true nature. He had a plan that would allow him, Nico, and their parents to survive the "Next Wave" that would annihilate humanity, but Nico rejected his advances and punched him in the face. Alex was killed by the Gibborim for his part in disrupting their ritual sacrifice. The Runaways narrowly avoided a similar fate, and Nico's parents sacrified themselves in the effort to hold the Gibborim at bay so that the children could escape. Despite his betrayal, Nico tried to magically resurrect Alex by using the Staff of One. She believes her resurrection spell failed, though evidence suggests otherwise.
Following the death of their parents, the Runaways were split up by California Social Services. Nico was sent to Father Flanagan's Orphanage, where she saw a psychologist. She claimed to be "finished with boys" as a result of her last two failed relationships, to the delight of teammate Karolina Dean, who had a crush on her.
Recently, Karolina tried to kiss Nico and came out to her. Nico told Karolina she had no romantic feelings for her, but was devastated when Karolina chose to leave Earth with her fiancée Xavin. Even a month after her friend's departure Nico has been depressed over the situation. She attmepted to find solace by confiding to Chase and, during a tense moment, kissed him. Chase remains loyal to Gert, however, so it is currently unseen whether her action has changed the dynamic between the three of them, as they both agreed not to tell Gert.
Nico is the current de facto leader of the Runaways. At first, a rather cheerful if occasionally morose girl, Nico has become increasingly cold and hardened after her experiences and the loss of so many loved ones.

Chase Stein (Talkback)
Age: 17
Powers: Had the most powerful gauntlets ever invented, the Fistigons,
which he stole from his parent's lab. Can create fire and shape
the flames into anything he imagines. Also has goggles which
can see through solid objects (which he also stole from his
parent's lab). Both the goggles and the fistigons were destroyed
as of issue 17, leaving Chase powerless. In issue 18, he stole
back the Leapfrog from the Avengers and is currently piloting
it. The Leapfrog recently starting talking to Chase and calling
him "Master"
Love Life: Currently dating Gert
Character History:
Chase Stein is the son of mad scientists Victor and Janet Stein. The two supposedly made a fortune from inventing a tool that removes stickers from CDs, but were actually members of the secret group of super villains called The Pride. Victor often physically abused Chase for talking back and for getting poor grades in school.
Chase often comes across as being a dumb, obnoxious jock, but he is surprisingly street smart. Before learning that his parents were members of The Pride, Chase wanted to be an announcer for ESPN, but after his experiences with the Runaways he decides that he wants to join the FBI to help other troubled teens like themselves (with the added perk of carrying a gun all the time.)
He receives his codename "Talkback" from Gertrude's sarcastic remark (he wanted to be called "Neo") and for his habit of talking back. The only Runaway with a driver's license, Chase transports the team in his white van. He uses equipment stolen from his parents: "weaponized" gloves called Fistigons and multispectral goggles, but the gauntlets are destroyed in the final battle with the Pride. Chase was the one who originally found the Runaways' first hideout, a "missing mansion" which was swallowed up during an earthquake in the 1920s or 1930s that he nicknamed "The Hostel".
When the Runaways sneak into the under-sea lair of The Pride in an effort to stop their parents from presenting an offering to the Gibborim, the teens are attacked by the hideout's security system: a giant stone golem. During the ensuing battle, Chase nearly drowns and is given CPR by Gertrude Yorkes. He shows his gratitude by kissing her, and calls her "the hottest chick [he's] ever seen." As he is too weak to continue on to face The Pride, Chase offers the Fistigons and goggles to Alex Wilder, who later betrays them all. Chase saves the team from certain death by hot-wiring the transport ship his parents designed, the Leapfrog, and getting them out of the Gibborim's lair before it explodes.
When the Runaways are split up by Social Services, Chase tells the authorities that he is going to go and live with an Aunt in Anaheim, but instead gives them a false address and runs away again. Later, when the rest of the Runaways leave their foster homes to meet each other, Chase turns up by surprise and leads the teens off to release Gert's raptor, Old Lace, from an Avengers storage complex. After succeeding, the kids decide to stay together rather than return to their foster homes and move off to their new lives in the Leapfrog.
With the Fistigons now gone, Chase helps the team by piloting the Leapfrog, which serves as their getaway vehicle. As opposed to most vessels, which are designated "she," Chase has specifically designated the Leapfrog a male vessel, as the team had "more than enough estrogen". Chase uses the Leapfrog's lasers, which he has only just discovered, to attack Excelsior. Chase now knows how to fix The Leapfrog after it was shot down by a blast from Darkhawk's amulet. He has also recently discovered that the "Frog" can talk, and it calls him "Master," to Chase's delight.
The Runaways have a shocking encounter with Gert's older self, who travels from 20 years in the future to tell the Runaways about Victor Mancha, a boy who will grow up to be a deadly super-villain. Suffering from internal injuries sustained in a battle with "Victorious," the older Gert confesses her love for Chase before dying in his arms. Visibly shaken, Chase vows to "tear [Victor's] damn heart out."
However, the present-day Victor is an innocent young man, and a battle with Ultron leaves him an orphan. He joins the Runaways despite Chase's clear animosity towards him. Chase is also concerned that Gert may be infatuated with Victor, who is more her intellectual equal. Though Gert assures him that she only loves him, Chase remains leery of Victor's place among them.
More recently, it has been hinted that Chase himself has a dark-side. In the "East Coast/West Coast" arc, Chase tells the Pusher Man that he once beat a gang member to death when the other teen tried to steal Chase's van. He did not confirm whether it was fact, though he says that his relationship with Gert is what keeps him "good". Earlier in Series 2, there was a time when he nearly confesses a personal secret to Nico but is interrupted. It is likely that this murder was his secret, as they were mentioned in the same arc.

Karolina Dean (Lucy in the Sky)
Age:
16
Powers: Is a Majesdanian alien with light projectile powers
and flight.
Love Life: Currently off world with her girlfriend Xavin (a
Skrull) trying to stop a war between the Skrulls and the Majesdanes
Character History:
Karolina Dean is the daughter of Frank and
Leslie Dean, two alien overlords who posed as Hollywood actors
when they came to Earth. Despite growing up with two famous
parents, Karolina was untouched by Hollywood scandal and developed
a strong moral compass. She also showed interest in new age
beliefs. She is a vegan and originally wanted to be an actress
like her mother.
Karolina's alien heritage gives her ability to fly and manipulate solar energy. Her powers were inhibited for most of her life thanks to a med alert bracelet forged from a strange metal. Her parents, wishing to give her a "normal" life, lied about her having a deadly allergy and instructed her to never take the bracelet off. For a long time Karolina is ashamed of her alien heritage, believing herself to be a freak, and doesn't put much value in her own life. This is shown to be true when she offers to sacrifice herself to save her teammates when they are attacked by a youthful vampire they have taken into their company. The vampire is killed when he drinks her blood due to the irradiated solar energy her body stores.
After the defeat of The Pride, the Runaways are split up by Social Services. Karolina Dean is sent to a foster family who are addicted to prescription painkillers, and she is forced to see a psychologist. Missing her fellow Runaways, Karolina organizes a reunion, asking the team to meet her at the James Dean memorial where they decided to run away the first time. After the girls are joined by Chase, the team heads off to an Avengers storage complex to spring Gert's dinosaur, Old Lace. After succeeding, the kids decide to stay together rather than return to their foster homes and leave to their new lives in the Leapfrog.
Karolina is plagued by insecurity, whether by her weight, her status as an extraterrestrial, or her hidden homosexuality. In the months that have passed since the end of the first series, Karolina seems to have become more well-adjusted and open about her alien heritage. Throughout Series One it is insinuated that Karolina is actually attracted to Nico; this is confirmed in issue #7 of Series Two, when Karolina unsuccessfully tries to kiss her friend. Her love life becomes more complicated with the arrival of Xavin, a Super-Skrull in training, and her fiancé through an arranged marriage.
After a brief battle between Xavin and the Runaways, Karolina parts ways with the group, but she hesitates, since she does not want to continue "living a lie" by marrying a man and denying her true sexuality. Xavin then reveals that, since Skrulls are shape-shifters, he can easily change his gender and becomes a woman for her. Karolina returns to her home planet with Xavin in hopes of stopping the war that had raged between it and the Skrulls that had been triggered by her parents. She leaves her med bracelet to Nico as a gift and remains in contact with the Runaways via voice transmissions.
Gertrude Yorkes (Arsenic)
Age: 15
Powers: Has a mental and empathic link with her pet velociraptor
deinonychus Old Lace, whom was genetically engineered in the
future by her time traveling parents to respond to only Gert's
mental commands.
Love Life: Currently dating Chase
Character History:
Gertrude Yorkes is an incredibly smart and
clever individual, and is very frank and sarcastic when addressing
others. Gert has socialist leanings, and wanted to be a senator
before her experiences as a Runaway soured her to adults in
positions of power. Gert was the only Runaway not shocked by
the revelation that her parents were members of the secret super-villain
organization known as the The Pride; she was convinced her parents
were secretly evil at a young age, for she believed they were
responsible for the disappearance of her first pet, a potbelly
pig named Orwell.
At the beginning of the series she inherits a genetically engineered dinosaur (whom she dubs Old Lace) from her time-traveling, warlord parents. Gert sees Old Lace as more than a pet, which is likely a result of their psychic bond; when one is injured, the other feels pain.
Her codename Arsenic is a reference to the classic play and film. Gert was the Runaway who first suggested taking codenames, and she sticks to hers longer than the others. Gert at first rejects her given name, wishing to shed her parents' influence completely, but finally concedes that "some things" they gave her are worth keeping.
Gert considers herself to be agnostic, though she is ethnically Jewish. She is presented as knowing a little Hebrew, presumably as a result of a Jewish education.
She is currently dating Chase Stein; the two had their first kiss after Gert performed CPR on him, saving his life after a near drowning. Chase declared her to be "the hottest chick [he's] ever seen." Despite their differences, the two are very much in love. In fact, her relationship with Chase has softened her somewhat; while she hasn't lost her sarcastic edge, she often acts as the team's voice of reason, and Molly Hayes often looks to her as a big sister.
In issue #1 of the second series we meet a future version of Gert; in one Marvel universe timeline she becomes the leader of the Avengers under the codename Heroine. She uses her parents' time machine to warn the Runaways of Victor Mancha, who will one day become the deadly super-villain Victorious. She then dies in Chase's arms from internal injuries.
During the Runaways' attempt to bring Victor to the Hostel, he explains to Gert that Old Lace is not a Velociraptor but actually a Deinonychus. Despite the fact that he will kill her in one possible future, Gert hasn't shown any hostility towards the young, innocent Victor, mainly because she believes that the future is not set, and Victor has the power to shape his own destiny. Victor has shown himself to be Gert's intellectual equal, which bothers Chase; despite Gert's assurances that she loves only him, Chase fears that there may be an attraction brewing between Victor and Gert.
Random information on Gert:
Agnostic Jew
Had a Bat Mitzvah

Allergic to bee stings
Molly Hayes (Bruiser/Princess Powerful)
Age: 11
Powers: Is a mutant with super strength. Unfortunately, Molly
gets very sleepy after using her powers
Love Life: Dreams of growing up and marrying Wolverine from
the X-Men. She met Wolverine in issue #12 of the Second Season and doesn't seem to like him anymore
Character History:
Molly Hayes is by far the youngest of the group, and while naïve,
she is quite precocious, seeming to know more than she should
for an eleven year old. She is the most idealistic member of
the Runaways, and is the only one who made a super-hero costume.
Molly thinks that running away is a great adventure, but has
to be continually reminded that her parents are supervillains.
Out of all the Runaways, she is the only one who truly misses
her family.
During a fight with Cloak and Dagger, who were hired by underlings
of The Pride to capture the Runaways, Molly ripped off Cloak's
cloak, turning him back into an ordinary human. Molly admires
fellow mutant super heroes, such as the X-Men and X-Statix,
and has a crush on Wolverine. Originally she wanted the codename
Princess Powerful (a reference to Power Princess), but instead
Chase dubs her "Bruiser" as payback for laughing at the codename
Gert sticks him with.
When the Runaways were split up by Social Services, Molly was
picked up by a local branch of X-Corp. Three months pass and
Karolina organizes a reunion, and the kids decide to stay together
in the Leapfrog rather than return to their new lives. When
Excelsior and the Runaways faced off against each other, she
fought Chamber.
Whenever the team separates to buy supplies, Molly is paired
with new teammate Victor Mancha. Victor wonders if this is because
Molly is the only member of the team strong enough to take him
down if he unwillingly goes rogue. Molly promises not to treat
the cyborg (who is actually "younger" than her) like a baby,
which reveals her own need to be treated as a young adult.
Random information on Molly:
Loves the cereal Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs
Victor Mancha
Age:
Looks 16 but was assembled not that long ago
Powers: Cyborg son of the robotic Avengers foe Ultron and Marianella
Mancha (killed by Ultron). He has electromagnetic abilities.
Love Life: None as of now, although Chase seems to think that
Victor may have feelings for Gert
Character History:
Ultron met Marianella Mancha in a scrapyard after fighting the Avengers. Marianella was a drug mule who was physically unable to have children, and Ultron promised to give her a child as a "reward" for saving him, though he had ulterior motives. Marianella, a devout Christian, saw Ultron as a John the Baptist figure and followed his words. He used her DNA to begin work on a fully-grown cyborg that was programmed with false memories of a normal childhood. He then dubbed the cyborg "Victor" and gave it a deep-rooted love for super-heroes. Ultron's long-term plan involved sending Victor to New York City when he was twenty-one so that he could meet his idols, the Avengers, and be recruited to the team after exhibiting his powers. Ultron counted on Victor's Hispanic heritage garnering him a spot on the team to fulfill the Avengers' need for ethnic diversity.
In one Marvel timeline, Ultron's plan succeeds. Victor joins the Avengers under the codename Victorious and becomes the world's greatest super-hero. After learning the secret plans, strengths, and weaknesses of his teammates, Victor's sleeper-switch is activated and he kills every super-hero on Earth, including the Avengers, the Fantastic Fourteen, Iron Woman, and the X-Men. The leader of the Avengers, Heroine (who is in fact an older version of the Runaways' very own Arsenic) goes back in time to deliver a warning to her past self and her former teammates. Heroine dies, but not before telling the Runaways where to find the present-day Victor Mancha.
Marianella keeps Victor isolated on the West Coast so that he will not make contact with any super-beings, who are concentrated on the East Coast. As a result of his cybernetic parts, Victor cannot pass through metal detectors. Victor is a student at East Angeles High School in Los Angeles when he first meets the Runaways. Ultron, still wishing to keep Victor's true origin a secret, sends a Doombot to kidnap Marianella and pose as Victor's father. Victor and the Runaways rush to the rescue and the Doombot is destroyed; Ultron chooses that moment to reveal himself and kills Marianella right in front of Victor. Ultron then triggers Victor's sleeper-switch so that he will attack the Runaways; however, Gert is able to reason with Victor and he rejects his programming, defying his "father." Afterwards, the Runaways take the now-orphaned Victor back to their hideout to keep him from ending up in Social Services.
Because of his superior intelligence and electromagnetic powers, Chase calls him the Calculator Kid and Nico calls him Zapper. After observing the team in action for a month, Victor proves his worth by defeating Swarm using his electromagnetic abilities.
The Runaways are mostly friendly towards Victor, but they know that he is still a potential threat. He is often paired with Molly Hayes when the team separates to buy supplies, because Molly is the only individual member of the team strong enough to take him down should he go rogue. Chase Stein is still suspicious of Victor, and resents his developing interest in Gert. Judging by a comment made by Nico Minoru at the end of "True Believers," she is fully prepared to kill Victor if the need arises.
